Cottrell Scholar Conference July 9

“Leading Change: Engaging Your Students, Your Colleagues and the Public to Transform STEM Education” is the theme of the Cottrell Scholar Conference, to be held July 9-11, at the Westin La Paloma Resort in Tucson, Arizona.

More than 60 people from academia, government and philanthropy will be attending the RCSA-sponsored conference, this year celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Keynote speakers include:

--  Mats Selen, professor of physics, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will discuss innovative projects designed to engage people with each-other and with science. Among other projects Selen has been a prime mover behind the massive curriculum revision of Illinois’ calculus-based introductory physics courses (Physics 211-214).

--  Cathy Middlecamp, professor of chemistry, University of Wisconsin, Madison, will explore the high-level thinking skill she calls “connecting the dots,” which requires both the intellect and the imagination. She is editor-in-chief for 7th and 8th editions of Chemistry in Context, a textbook that engages undergraduates in the context of real-world issues.

--  Robert Shelton, newly appointed president of Research Corporation for Science Advancement, will discuss the vital need for faculty engagement and leadership to achieve significant enhancement of the research climate at universities. An experimental physicist specializing in condensed-matter physics, Shelton has spent much of his career in public education. He is the former president of the University of Arizona (2006-2011).

The conference is by invitation only. For more information contact RCSA Program Director Silvia Ronco: sronco@rescorp.org.
