RCSA Welcomes 2021 Fulbright-Cottrell Scholars

The German-American Fulbright Commission has named Juliane Simmchen and Simon Stellmer recipients of the 2021 Fulbright-Cottrell Award for excellence in research and teaching.

The award, which began in 2016 and is based on Research Corporation for Science Advancement’s Cottrell Scholar Award, recognizes junior faculty in chemistry, physics, and astronomy for integrating pioneering research with innovative teaching.

“These outstanding teacher-scholars are a welcome addition to the Cottrell Scholar network,” said Senior Program Director Silvia Ronco. “Their participation in Cottrell Scholar meetings and conferences, and collaboration on team projects, gives our community a broader impact around the world.”

Funds for the awards are made available by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Simmchen leads a research group in the Department of Physical Chemistry at Technische Universität Dresden that is investigating the basic mechanisms that drive micromotion as well as targeted material design for future microswimmer applications. She received the award for her project, “Unravelling the Influence of Activity in the Formation of Matter.”

Stellmer leads a group at the University of Bonn’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, where they are using an interdisciplinary approach to quantum metrology, aiming to increase measurement sensitivity using phenomena from quantum physics. The award is in recognition for his project, “A Passive Ring Laser Gyroscope to Measure the Rotation of Earth.”
