Scialog: Neurobiology and Changing Ecosystems Fellows Selected

More than 40 early career researchers have been selected as Fellows for the first meeting of Scialog: Neurobiology and Changing Ecosystems, a Research Corporation for Science Advancement initiative that aims to spark new science exploring neurobiological response to today’s unprecedented challenge of rapid and extensive human-caused environmental changes.

In addition, 10 senior scientists have been chosen to serve as Facilitators to guide discussions, help frame the large questions under consideration, and to evaluate proposals for seed funding to pursue novel, high-risk research that can best be explored in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary way.

Scialog: Neurobiology and Changing Ecosystems is cosponsored with The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group, the Frederick Gardner Cottrell Foundation, and The Kavli Foundation. The first of three meetings in this series will be March 13 – 16, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona.

“From Scialog’s beginning in 2010, RCSA has led a thread of initiatives in the energy and environment space due to the urgency of global climate change: Solar Energy Conversion, Advanced Energy Storage, Negative Emissions Science, Sustainable Minerals, Metals, and Materials, and now Neurobiology and Changing Ecosystems,” said RCSA Senior Program Director Andrew Feig, who leads the initiative. “I’m proud of the collective response of science philanthropies to this emergency.”

Late applications to become a Fellow will still be accepted, and about 10 additional Fellows for the 2025 meeting will be named in the coming weeks as RCSA continues to round out the disciplinary diversity desired for the cohort. Further opportunities for Fellows to join the initiative in subsequent years will also become available.

This interdisciplinary community of Fellows represents institutions across the United States and Canada, and includes early career researchers with diverse scientific expertise and perspectives in cell biology, genetics, neurophysiology, climate science, environmental chemistry, physical modeling, toxicology, and other fields.

This series of meetings is RCSA’s third Scialog with The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group and the fourth with the Frederick Gardner Cottrell Foundation. It will complement the multi-year Neurobiology and Changing Ecosystems initiative launched in 2023 by The Kavli Foundation, which has provided support for four previous Scialog initiatives.

Scialog, created by RCSA in 2010, is short for “science + dialog.” The goal of each Scialog series is to facilitate connections among scientists from a variety of disciplines and research areas so they can discuss challenges and bottlenecks to advancing fundamental science, build community around visionary goals, and develop ideas for innovative team projects.

RCSA's other current Scialog initiatives include Automating Chemical Laboratories, Early Science with the LSST, and Sustainable Minerals, Metals, and Materials.
