In the mid-1980s, hoping to take advantage of the privatization of industry taking place at that time in the United Kingdom, Research Corporation and Investors in Industry (a major independent U.K. financial institution) formed Research Corporation Trust, a joint venture designed to encourage and sponsor the commercial development of research projects by British universities. A subsidiary, Research Corporation Limited, was established to evaluate, patent and license inventions. The project was abandoned after several years.
