Severo Ochoa (1905-1993) was awarded the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine in 1959. Ochoa received RC grants in 1941 for research on the intermediary carbohydrate metabolism; in 1944 for research on the respiratory enzymes and the mechanism of the biological oxidation of pyruvic acid; and in 1951 to study enzyme systems involved in biological oxidations and syntheses.
