1997

Research Innovation Awards were launched.

Research Corporation started the Research Innovation Awards in 1997 to encourage research that transcends the ordinary. First-year faculty in their first tenure-eligible appointment in chemistry, physics and astronomy departments at public or private institutions were eligible for RIA awards.

RIA proposals were judged on scientific significance, potential impact and feasibility, but most importantly on their potential for innovation. Examples of successful applications included innovative research that would help develop new methodologies or find creative solutions to interdisciplinary problems of potential scientific significance.

The awards were suspended in 2003 while staff reassessed their impact and were discontinued in 2004.
