Claude E. Shannon received the 1956 Research Corporation Award “for his pioneering researches on the mathematical foundations of information theory.” Shannon was a mathematician, electronic engineer, and cryptographer. While a graduate student at MIT, Shannon worked with Vannevar Bush on Bush’s analog computer, the differential analyzer.
